Over the years, technology has drastically transformed into a much simpler, cost-effective and more efficient way of life.
Nowadays, computers can interact with each other as well as manage crucial software systems at a remarkable pace. As a result, the way we live and work in the digital age has evolved significantly.
Ambient computing is one of the latest extraordinary developments to happen in the computing space. It includes a wide range of concepts. At its core it is the combination of hardware, programming, client experience and human / machine interaction, however, it is more than just being a part of tech, ambient computing sets numerous technologies together to make a domain that responds to individual needs.
In order to better grasp onto ambient computing, we should look at the concept of the IoT – Internet of Things. The IoT connects various technologies together simultaneously working in harmony to deliver a smart experience to the users. For example ; visualize a smart building with their sensors, memory and ability; when you enter the building with your pass, it remembers your preferred temperature and lighting, it knows how and when you like your coffee, it reminds you when your meeting is due.
This concept may sound too futuristic and possibly costly but IoT is actually a cost-saving idea in the long run. Believe it or not, it is already used all around the world, even in our home. Our own personal devices such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, smart watches, coffee machines and smart lighting are just some examples all ambient computing experiences we use on a daily basis.
Ambient computing is known to be “invisible” or unnoticed. In a business conference, the AI system could be recording the conversations or gathering information. Simultaneously, your camera must be working on adjusting to focus on the person on stage or improving the image quality. These devices are made to operate in the background without being visible. They monitor us and acknowledge our habits and needs.
Incorporating a fully integrated smart workplace will allow cost saving for companies and increase flexibility and collaboration for employees along with deploying voice interfaces and sensors in their offices. In 2010, we saw the evolution of phones with touchscreen interfaces, two-sided cameras and unlimited high speed data that is always connected. Needless to say, it is inevitable that the innovations and smart technology will take over the workplace norm and transform it into a much integrated and smoother process.
As stated by Five9’s Rowan Trollope, Artificial Intelligence and Ambient Computing deliver completely enhanced experiences in the workplace. They have already provided some services that have incorporated seamlessly in our everyday life, such as voice driven speakers. Some other key components of ambient computing are virtual agents and chatbots.
As we move forward, we will have the option to work in a manner that further improves our efficiency and provide us with more opportunity to focus on important tasks rather than the day to day mundane work. Adapting to changes, anticipating needs and producing innovative solutions that enhance our work as well as improve our experiences in everyday life. As ambient computing continue to evolve, the future will surely become device-less and faster.
